My cat has a bald patch?

This is the second time he has done this. He jsut licks between his sholder-blades so much that he licks off the fur and makes the skin get red (over the course of a week or so). The first time it happened we tried to put polysporin on it to heal the scab but he kept licking it off so we stopped doing that. I figure it could be stress related because we've recently had a roomate move in with hubby and I. But at the same time his demeanor hasn't changed at all and he loves our roommate and plays with her and snuggles and loves to go snooze on her bed all day. I just don't want it to get really bad and bleeding and stuff.

Notes: he's a strictly indoor cat, we have one other housecat and they love eachother, he's not sick.

My cat has a bald patch?
Sounds like stress.

My boyfriend's dad had a cat that started doing that when he got another cat, even though the cats got along well. Eventually the cat with the bald spot ran away (actually I think it just got lost when it went exploring)...

about 6 months later his dad found the cat a few blocks away with a couple more bald spots.

He took the cat back home and apparently she was so happy to be back - even with the other cat - that all the spots disappeared within weeks and have been gone ever since.

Even if the cat likes the roommate, it could still be under stress from the change, especially if he/she has only ever had you and your hubby as "housemates."

You should see about getting one of those elizabethan collars if it gets scabby and bloody, so that it can at least heal.
Reply:It could be allergies or a skin irritation I would ask your vet though to see what you can do.
Reply:my cat had the same problem but it was by her ears. It turned out that she had an allergy to the chicken preservative in her food. Change to a different food and see if that helps
Reply:This is puzzling, maybe he developed a phobia, like some people do. I think that if he keeps on doing this, you could a call vet, of coarse he'll want you to bring him in, , he may be lacking something in his diet.
Reply:This happened to my mom's cat when I brought my two cats home. One of my cats used to chase her cat around and she started licking her stomach fur all the time to the point where her stomach had no more fur on it. We took her to the vet but the vet couldn't find anything wrong and said it's probably just a nervous habit usually brought on by change. Cats don't like change so try to keep your cats routine the same even though you have a new person living there. When you see your cat licking that area - try to discourage it by offering a toy to distract him. All the fur on my mom's cat grew back and she stopped licking after I moved out w/ my cat. Good luck.
