Ulcer diagosis and H Pylori and gastric erosions?

Hi all,

I've had an endoscopy and no ulcers could be found except a few gastric erosions (similar to light ulcers I believe).

The surgeon did a single biopsy for H Pylori and allegedly had it tested. I phoned back for the results and they had trouble finding them. They eventually said it was negative. I don't believe it.

I had read that they would have had to take several skin samples to determine H Pylori properly via endoscopy.

Is the surgeon wrong?

If so, where could I get a H Pylori test done myself, over the internet test kit, GP or another specialist (second opinion). This is ruining my life. My eating is never correct, and after 8-10 weeks I can't eat anything without lots of stomach ache, cramps, trapped wind (but no real burning sensation).

He has now told me to continue with Omeprazone for 6 weeks and have another endoscopy. I've read its pointless doing an endoscopy if I you take anti-acid PPIs anyway!

I think he is crazy.

With hope,

Lee.

Ulcer diagosis and H Pylori and gastric erosions?
I had the same symptoms and a similar consultant diagnosis %26amp; treatment some time ago, so I would trust in the expertise of your surgeon.

The test for H Pylori depends on taking samples during a gastroscopy.Another advantage of this second gastrosopy is to check whether there is any bleeding from the erosions. This maybe should be combined with a blood test to check if you have any iron deficiency anaemia .I went through exactly the same procedures but initially they missed the anaemia as there was a slow blood loss which wasn't picked up until one year later.H Pylori was negative in my case too.

Following prolonged treatment with lanzoprazole (a proton pump inhibitor to reduce stomach acid similar to omeprazole), and iron tablets I am fine .It took a while to get the correct dose which was important but I am now symptom free. Gastroscopy is an unpleasant procedure, but its a short procedure and gives a direct view of the problem and helps confirm the diagnosis.

You do need to check out for possible anaemia as this can be missed and makes you feel lousy.

Hope this helps as I am also a bit cynical too, but your surgeon is probably correct .

Best of luck

I still think you should have a repeat endoscoscopy but talk to your GP and discuss your worries with him/her.The GP should be able to discuss your case with the consultant and make sure that your concerns are put. Make a list of the various issues including my comments, but say you have got these from others with thesame problems ( perhaps avoid mentioning the Net !)

It took me two years and a change of GP and consultant to sort it out.
Reply:I had an endoscopy for stomach troubles, they only did 1 biopsy for H Pylori,Im also on Omeprazole and have been for 2 years, and its not pointless doing the endoscopy while your on it.

You could have Irritible Bowel Syndrome, you have all the symptoms, thats what i have got ,its not something that shows up on the endoscopy, and the omeprazole isnt a treatment for it either, thats just for exessive stomach acid.
Reply:Have you heard of a fruit named 'Mangosteen'? It is gown in SE Asia and is now produced as a nutritional fruit juice known as Xango. It is documented and researched to be a very powerful anti-oxident and anti-inflammatory that is excellent in the repair of the digestive system. It contains no chemicals and therefore does not exacibate the problem.
Reply:I dont know where you are getting your info from but it doesnt sound right to me. I also have erosions of the duodenum discovered by endoscopy and a biopsy taken for bacteria - they only need one sample and not several. My test was also negative and the erosions flare up through stress. I take ranatidine whenever its bad - also its never a waste of time doing further endoscopys as they can see instantly if the problem is better or worse and if the treatment is working xxxxx
Reply:i have had an h pylori test and you have to do a breath test
Reply:I don't have any info on H. Pylori, but your symptoms INCLUDING THE GASTRIC EROSION sounds like a classic case of Celiac Disease! Check out www.celiac.com and www.glutenfreeforum.com for more information. It's a very easy to manage disease that just requires a change in diet.
